Blot up as much urine as possible with paper towels or a clean cloth
Press firmly and replace towels until the area is mostly dry
Rinse the spot with cool water
Blot again to remove the water
Apply an enzymatic pet urine cleaner to the affected area
Follow the product instructions and let it sit for the recommended time
Blot the area with a clean cloth
Repeat the enzymatic cleaner if needed
Sprinkle baking soda over the area after it is mostly dry
Let the baking soda sit for several hours or overnight
Vacuum up the baking soda
Avoid using ammonia-based cleaners
Avoid steam cleaning before the urine is fully removed
Test any cleaner on a small hidden area first
Clean the carpet padding if the urine has soaked through
Use a wet-dry vacuum if needed to extract deeper moisture
Repeat treatment until the odor is gone
Keep the cat away from the area until it is completely dry
