Thaw the turkey completely in the refrigerator
Remove the giblets and neck from the turkey cavity
Pat the turkey dry with paper towels
Season the turkey inside and out with salt, pepper, and any preferred herbs or spices
If desired, rub the skin with butter or oil
Place the roaster oven insert rack inside the roaster oven
Add water or broth to the roaster pan if desired
Preheat the roaster oven to 325°F
Place the turkey breast-side up on the rack
Cover the roaster oven with the lid
Cook the turkey until the internal temperature reaches 165°F in the thickest part of the breast and 175°F in the thigh
Baste the turkey occasionally if desired
Check the temperature with a meat thermometer near the end of cooking
Remove the turkey from the roaster oven when fully cooked
Let the turkey rest for 20 to 30 minutes before carving
Carve and serve the turkey
