Bring 3 to 4 cups of water or milk to a boil for each 1 cup of steel cut oats
Add a pinch of salt if desired
Stir in 1 cup of steel cut oats
Reduce heat to low
Simmer uncovered or partially covered for 20 to 30 minutes
Stir occasionally to prevent sticking
Cook until the oats are tender and creamy
Add more liquid if needed for a softer texture
Remove from heat
Let stand for 2 to 3 minutes
Serve with desired toppings or mix-ins
