Turn off the garbage disposal
Unplug the disposal or switch off the circuit breaker
Check the sink for standing water
Use tongs or pliers to remove visible debris
Press the reset button on the bottom of the unit
Insert an Allen wrench into the bottom socket and turn it back and forth to free the blades
Use a wooden spoon handle to gently move the impeller from above if needed
Run cold water and turn the disposal on briefly
Repeat the reset and turning steps if it is still jammed
Use a plunger on the sink drain if the clog remains
Remove and clean the P-trap if the drain is blocked
Avoid using chemical drain cleaners
Call a plumber if the disposal still will not run or drain properly
