Prune sage in early spring after new growth begins
Remove dead, damaged, or diseased stems first
Cut back about one-third of the plant to encourage bushy growth
Trim leggy stems to just above a leaf node
Avoid cutting into old woody stems with no leaves
Lightly shape the plant after flowering if needed
Use clean, sharp pruning shears
Remove spent flower stalks as they appear
Stop heavy pruning in late summer or fall
Discard pruned material that shows signs of disease
