How to Replace Engine Coolant?

Park the vehicle on a level surface and let the engine cool completely

Open the hood and locate the coolant reservoir and radiator cap

Place a drain pan under the radiator drain plug or lower hose

Remove the radiator cap only when the engine is fully cool

Open the drain plug or disconnect the lower radiator hose to drain the old coolant

Drain the coolant from the engine block if the vehicle requires it

Close the drain plug or reconnect the lower hose

Mix the new coolant with distilled water if required by the manufacturer

Fill the radiator with the correct coolant type and mixture

Fill the coolant reservoir to the proper level

Start the engine and set the heater to maximum heat

Let the engine run until it reaches operating temperature

Check for air bubbles and add coolant as needed

Shut off the engine and let it cool again

Recheck the coolant level in the radiator and reservoir

Top off the coolant if necessary

Inspect for leaks around hoses, drain plugs, and the radiator cap

Dispose of old coolant properly at a recycling or hazardous waste facility
