Park on level ground and turn off the engine
Wait a few minutes for the oil to settle
Open the hood and locate the dipstick
Pull the dipstick out completely
Wipe it clean with a lint-free cloth or paper towel
Reinsert the dipstick fully
Pull it out again
Check where the oil film reaches on the stick
Read the marks labeled MIN and MAX or LOW and FULL
Make sure the oil level is between the marks
Add oil if the level is below the minimum mark
Check the oil color and consistency for signs of contamination
Recheck after adding oil if needed
