Locate the main water shutoff valve
Find the valve near the water meter, where the main line enters the house, or in the basement, crawl space, garage, or utility area
Turn the valve clockwise until it stops if it is a round wheel-style valve
Turn the lever handle a quarter turn until it is perpendicular to the pipe if it is a ball valve
Check that water has stopped by opening a faucet
Turn off individual fixture shutoff valves if you only need to stop water to one sink, toilet, or appliance
Use the curb stop or meter valve only if you know it is accessible and you are authorized to use it
Call a plumber or your water utility if the valve is stuck, leaking, or cannot be found
