Remove any rings immediately
Rest the finger
Elevate the hand above heart level
Apply a cold compress for 15 to 20 minutes at a time
Repeat cold compresses every 2 to 3 hours
Wrap the finger lightly with an elastic bandage if needed
Avoid using the finger
Take an over-the-counter anti-inflammatory pain reliever if safe for you
Keep the finger clean if there is a cut or injury
Apply gentle movement after swelling starts to go down
Seek medical care if the swelling is severe, worsening, or lasts more than a few days
Seek urgent care if there is deformity, severe pain, numbness, redness, warmth, pus, or trouble moving the finger
