Remove rocks, weeds, and debris
Loosen the top 2 to 4 inches of soil
Level the area with a rake
Test the soil if possible
Add topsoil or compost if the dirt is poor
Spread grass seed evenly
Lightly rake the seed into the soil
Press the seed into the soil with a roller or by walking on it
Water gently to keep the soil consistently moist
Keep the area moist until germination
Water less often but more deeply after grass sprouts
Apply starter fertilizer if needed
Avoid walking on the new grass
Mow only after the grass reaches the proper height
Fill thin spots with more seed if needed
