Lift the kitten’s tail gently and look at the area below the anus
Male kittens usually have two openings that are farther apart
Female kittens usually have two openings that are closer together
Male kittens often have a round genital opening
Female kittens often have a vertical slit-shaped genital opening
Male kittens may have a small space that looks more like a colon
Female kittens may have a shape that looks more like an exclamation mark
Check for any small testicle bulges, though they may not be visible in very young kittens
Compare with another kitten if possible
