Clean out any debris around the drain
Check the drain type and how it is secured
Use a drain key, pliers, or screwdriver if the drain has visible slots or screws
Insert a drain wrench or drain removal tool into the drain body
Turn counterclockwise to loosen the drain
Apply penetrating oil if the drain is stuck
Use heat carefully if needed to soften old sealant
Grip the drain flange with pliers if accessible
Lift the drain assembly out once loosened
Cut through old plumber’s putty or sealant if necessary
Remove any remaining gasket or seal material
Clean the drain opening after removal
