Hold the cane on the side opposite your weaker or injured leg
Stand upright with your shoulders relaxed
Adjust the cane so the handle is level with your wrist crease when your arm hangs naturally at your side
Keep a slight bend in your elbow when holding the cane
Move the cane and your weaker leg forward at the same time
Shift your weight onto the cane and stronger leg
Step through with your stronger leg
Keep the cane close to your body
Place the cane firmly on the ground before taking a step
Use the cane on stairs by going up with your stronger leg first
Use the cane on stairs by going down with your weaker leg and cane first
Wear non-slip shoes
Check the cane tip regularly for wear
Keep walkways clear of obstacles
Use handrails when available
Stop using the cane if it feels unstable or causes pain and get it checked
