Keep the child calm and comfortable
Use a cool-mist humidifier
Take the child into cool night air for a short time if breathing worsens
Give fluids to prevent dehydration
Use acetaminophen or ibuprofen for fever or discomfort if appropriate
Avoid smoke and other airway irritants
Seek urgent medical care if there is stridor at rest, trouble breathing, blue lips, drooling, severe fatigue, or worsening symptoms
Call a doctor if symptoms are not improving or the child is younger than 6 months
Use prescribed corticosteroids if given by a healthcare professional
Use nebulized epinephrine in a medical setting for severe croup
Follow up with a healthcare professional if symptoms persist or recur
