Drink warm fluids (tea, broth, warm water)
Stay well-hydrated
Gargle warm salt water
Use steam inhalation or a hot shower
Use a humidifier if air is dry
Try saline nasal spray or nasal irrigation
Perform nasal blowing gently and frequently
Use honey (1–2 teaspoons) for throat soothing
Avoid smoking and secondhand smoke
Avoid alcohol and very spicy or acidic foods if they worsen symptoms
Limit dairy if it appears to increase thickness for you
Sleep with your head elevated
If you have reflux symptoms, avoid eating within 2–3 hours of bedtime and reduce triggers (fatty foods, caffeine, chocolate, peppermint)
Consider an OTC expectorant (guaifenesin) if appropriate for you
Consider an OTC throat lozenge or spray for symptom relief
If allergies are likely, consider an OTC antihistamine and/or intranasal steroid (follow label directions)
Seek medical care urgently if you have trouble breathing, chest pain, coughing up blood, severe throat pain, drooling, or inability to swallow
Seek medical care if symptoms last more than 1–2 weeks, keep recurring, or are accompanied by fever, unexplained weight loss, or persistent hoarseness
