Wash your hands before and after touching the boil
Apply a warm, moist compress for 10 to 15 minutes, 3 to 4 times a day
Keep the area clean with mild soap and water
Do not squeeze, pop, or pick at the boil
Cover the boil with a clean, dry bandage or gauze
Change the dressing daily or whenever it becomes wet or dirty
Use separate towels, washcloths, and bedding
Wash clothing, towels, and bedding in hot water if possible
Take over-the-counter pain relief if needed and safe for you
Let the boil drain on its own if it opens
Clean the drainage gently and re-cover it with a fresh bandage
Seek medical care if the boil is very large, very painful, or not improving
Seek medical care if you have fever, spreading redness, red streaks, or multiple boils
Seek medical care if the boil is on the face, spine, groin, or near the anus
Seek medical care if you have diabetes, a weakened immune system, or recurrent boils
