Wash your hands
Clean the blister gently with soap and water
Leave the blister intact if possible
Cover it with a sterile bandage or blister pad
Use a cushioned dressing to reduce pressure
Avoid rubbing or friction on the area
Keep the area clean and dry
If the blister breaks, wash it gently
Apply a thin layer of antibiotic ointment if the skin is open
Cover it with a clean bandage
Change the bandage daily or when wet or dirty
Do not peel off the skin flap
Use over-the-counter pain relief if needed
Wear comfortable, well-fitting shoes or protective clothing
Rest the affected area when possible
Seek medical care if there are signs of infection
Seek medical care if the blister is large, very painful, or keeps returning
Seek medical care if you have diabetes or poor circulation
