Apply warm, moist compresses to the area for 10–15 minutes, 3–4 times daily
Keep the area clean with soap and water
Do not squeeze, pop, or lance the furuncle
Cover it with a clean, dry bandage if it drains
Wash hands before and after touching the area
Use over-the-counter pain relief if needed, following label directions
Avoid sharing towels, razors, clothing, or bedding
Wash clothing, towels, and bedding regularly in hot water
Seek medical care if the furuncle is large, very painful, or not improving
Seek medical care if you have fever, spreading redness, red streaks, or multiple boils
Seek medical care if the furuncle is on the face, spine, or near the eyes
Seek medical care if you have diabetes, a weakened immune system, or recurrent furuncles
A clinician may drain the furuncle or prescribe antibiotics if needed
