Apply warm, moist compresses to the boil for 10–15 minutes, 3–4 times a day
Keep the area clean with soap and water
Do not squeeze, pop, or pick at the boil
Cover it with a clean, dry bandage if it drains
Wash your hands before and after touching the area
Use separate towels, washcloths, and bedding
Take over-the-counter pain relief if needed and if safe for you
Seek medical care if the boil is very large, very painful, on the face, or near the spine
Seek medical care if you have fever, spreading redness, red streaks, or worsening swelling
Seek medical care if it does not improve after several days or keeps coming back
