How to Operate a Stihl Chainsaw?

Read the owner’s manual for your specific Stihl model

Wear PPE: helmet, eye protection, hearing protection, gloves, chainsaw chaps, long pants, and boots

Inspect the saw before use

Check chain tension

Check chain sharpness

Check bar and chain oil level

Check fuel level if gas-powered

Check for loose, damaged, or missing parts

Ensure the chain brake works

Fill fuel and bar oil with the engine off and cooled

Move at least 10 feet from the fueling area before starting

Engage the chain brake before starting

Set the saw on firm ground

Hold the saw securely

Use the correct starting method for your model

Use the choke as directed for a cold start

Pull the starter rope smoothly

Disengage the choke after the engine fires as directed

Let the engine warm up briefly

Release the chain brake only when ready to cut

Grip the front handle with the left hand and rear handle with the right hand

Keep both hands on the saw during operation

Stand with stable footing

Keep the saw below shoulder height

Keep the chain away from your body and bystanders

Start cutting with the lower part of the bar near the bumper spikes

Apply light pressure and let the chain do the work

Avoid cutting with the tip of the bar

Watch for kickback

Do not cut above shoulder level

Do not cut while standing on a ladder or unstable surface

Stop the engine before moving to a new location

Engage the chain brake when carrying the saw

Carry the saw with the bar pointed behind you

Turn off the engine before refueling, adjusting, or servicing

Clean debris from the saw after use

Check and tighten the chain after use if needed

Store the saw in a dry, secure place

Keep the saw out of reach of children
