Lift the toilet seat and lid
Locate the seat hinge caps or covers
Pry off the hinge caps if present
Find the mounting bolts underneath or behind the hinges
Hold the nut underneath the toilet bowl with one hand
Use a screwdriver or wrench to loosen the bolts from above
Remove the nuts and bolts completely
Lift the toilet seat and lid off the toilet
Clean the mounting area if needed
Dispose of or store the removed seat and hardware
