How to Replace a Closet Flange on a Toilet?

Turn off the water supply to the toilet

Flush the toilet to empty the tank and bowl

Sponge out any remaining water from the bowl and tank

Disconnect the water supply line from the toilet

Remove the toilet mounting bolts

Rock the toilet gently to break the wax seal

Lift the toilet straight up and set it aside

Scrape off the old wax ring from the toilet base and flange

Inspect the closet flange for cracks, rust, or damage

Remove any screws or fasteners holding the old flange

Cut away any old caulk or flooring around the flange

Remove the damaged flange from the drain pipe

Clean the pipe opening and surrounding floor

Dry-fit the new flange to confirm proper size and fit

Install the new flange over or inside the drain pipe as required

Align the flange so the bolt slots are positioned correctly

Secure the new flange to the floor with corrosion-resistant screws

Ensure the flange sits level and flush with the finished floor

Install a new wax ring or wax-free seal on the toilet outlet

Lower the toilet carefully onto the new flange and seal

Press the toilet down evenly to seat it properly

Reinstall and tighten the toilet bolts evenly

Reconnect the water supply line

Turn on the water supply and let the tank fill

Flush the toilet and check for leaks

Caulk around the toilet base if desired, leaving the back open

Trim excess bolt length and install bolt caps if needed
