Measure the existing attic ladder opening, ceiling height, and rough opening dimensions
Select a replacement attic ladder that matches the opening size and load rating
Clear the area below the ladder and protect the floor
Wear safety glasses, gloves, and a dust mask
Have a helper support the ladder during removal and installation
Remove any trim or molding around the attic opening
Unfasten the old ladder from the framing
Disconnect any springs, hinges, or support arms
Lower and remove the old ladder assembly
Inspect the attic framing for damage or rot
Repair or reinforce the framing if needed
Test-fit the new ladder in the opening
Shim the ladder frame as needed for a square fit
Secure the new ladder frame to the joists with the manufacturer’s recommended fasteners
Check that the ladder is centered and level
Attach any springs, hinges, or support hardware
Extend and retract the ladder to verify smooth operation
Adjust the ladder length if required
Install trim or insulation cover if included
Tighten all fasteners after final alignment
Test the ladder for stability and proper locking
Clean the work area and remove debris
