Turn off the power at the switch

Verify the light is off
Let the bulb cool if needed
Remove the bulb by turning it counterclockwise
Remove the fixture cover if applicable
Unscrew the mounting screws
Support the light fixture with one hand
Disconnect the wires
Cap the exposed wires
Remove the fixture from the ceiling or wall
Store or dispose of the light safely
