Sweep away dirt, leaves, and debris
Wash the deck with a deck cleaner
Scrub off mildew, grime, and old residue
Rinse thoroughly and let the deck dry completely
Sand rough spots, splinters, and any peeling areas
Repair loose boards, popped nails, and damaged wood
Protect nearby siding, railings, and plants with drop cloths or tape
Stir the stain well before and during use
Test the stain on a small hidden area
Apply stain with a brush, roller, pad, or sprayer
Work along the grain of the wood
Keep a wet edge to avoid lap marks
Apply thin, even coats
