Rest the injured area
Stop activities that cause pain
Apply ice for 15–20 minutes at a time
Repeat icing every 2–3 hours for the first 48 hours
Use a compression bandage or wrap
Elevate the injured area above heart level
Take over-the-counter pain relievers if needed
Avoid heat, alcohol, and massage during the first 48 hours
Protect the joint from further injury
Begin gentle movement when pain and swelling improve
Seek medical care if pain is severe, swelling is major, or you cannot bear weight
Seek medical care if the joint looks deformed or symptoms do not improve
