Keep the ear dry
Avoid inserting cotton swabs, fingers, or other objects into the ear
Use over-the-counter pain relievers as directed on the label
Apply a warm compress to the outer ear
Use prescribed ear drops if a clinician has recommended them
Avoid swimming until symptoms improve
Do not use ear drops if you suspect a ruptured eardrum unless a clinician says it is safe
Seek medical care if pain is severe, swelling worsens, fever develops, drainage occurs, or hearing decreases
Seek urgent care if the ear canal is completely blocked, symptoms spread to the face, or you have diabetes or a weakened immune system
