Take an over-the-counter pain reliever if safe for you, such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen
Apply a warm compress to the affected ear for 10 to 15 minutes at a time
Keep the ear dry
Sleep with your head elevated
Chew gum or swallow if the pain is related to pressure changes
Use over-the-counter ear drops only if they are labeled safe for ear pain and you do not have a perforated eardrum or ear tubes
Avoid putting anything into the ear, including cotton swabs
Avoid loud noise
Treat allergies or nasal congestion if present
See a doctor if the pain is severe, lasts more than a day or two, or comes with fever, drainage, hearing loss, dizziness, or swelling
