Locate the main water shutoff valve
Check the basement, crawl space, utility room, garage, or outside near the water meter
Turn the valve clockwise until it stops
If it is a lever-style valve, turn the handle a quarter turn so it is perpendicular to the pipe
Open a faucet to confirm the water is off
If you cannot find the valve, check near the street-side water meter or contact your water utility
If the valve is stuck, do not force it
Call a plumber or your water utility if needed
