Do not try to remove tooth decay yourself
Schedule an urgent dental appointment
If you have severe pain, swelling, fever, or trouble swallowing/breathing, seek emergency care
Rinse with warm salt water (1/2 teaspoon salt in a cup of warm water) several times daily
Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste using gentle pressure
Floss daily carefully around the affected area
Use a fluoride mouthwash if available
If a filling/crown is needed, avoid delaying treatment
Use temporary over-the-counter dental filling material only as short-term protection until you can see a dentist
Manage pain with OTC pain relievers as directed on the label (avoid exceeding the dose)
Avoid chewing on the affected side
Avoid very hot, cold, sweet, or sticky foods until you’re treated
Keep the area clean after meals (gentle brushing and rinsing)
Stop smoking or vaping if applicable
Drink water instead of sugary drinks
If you use a temporary filling, replace it if it falls out and keep the area clean
