How To Stop A Toothache?

Rinse with warm salt water (½ teaspoon salt in a cup of warm water)

Floss gently to remove trapped food between teeth

Apply a cold compress to the outside of the cheek for 15–20 minutes at a time

Take an over-the-counter pain reliever as directed (ibuprofen or naproxen; or acetaminophen if you can’t take NSAIDs)

Use an OTC numbing gel or benzocaine products as directed on the label

If you suspect a cavity, keep the area clean and avoid sugary or acidic foods

Avoid very hot, cold, or sweet foods and drinks

Chew on the opposite side of the mouth

Keep your head elevated when lying down to reduce throbbing

If there is swelling, do not apply heat to the face

Avoid smoking and alcohol

See a dentist as soon as possible, especially if pain lasts more than 24–48 hours or is worsening

Seek urgent dental or medical care immediately if you have fever, facial swelling, spreading redness, trouble swallowing, trouble breathing, or pus/bad taste with significant swelling
