How To Treat A Wasp Sting?

Move away from the wasp to avoid more stings

Remove any visible stinger if present

Wash the sting site with soap and water

Apply a cold pack or ice wrapped in cloth for 10 to 15 minutes

Elevate the area if it is on an arm or leg

Take an oral antihistamine for itching if needed

Use hydrocortisone cream or calamine lotion for itching

Take acetaminophen or ibuprofen for pain if needed

Avoid scratching the area

Monitor for signs of a severe allergic reaction

Call emergency services immediately if there is trouble breathing, swelling of the face or throat, dizziness, fainting, or widespread hives

Seek medical care if the sting is in the mouth, nose, or throat

Seek medical care if swelling or pain worsens or does not improve

Seek medical care if signs of infection develop such as increasing redness, warmth, pus, or fever

Use an epinephrine auto-injector immediately if prescribed for severe allergy
