How to Check for Celiac Disease?

See a doctor if you have symptoms such as chronic diarrhea, bloating, abdominal pain, weight loss, fatigue, anemia, or skin rash

Do not stop eating gluten before testing

Ask for celiac blood tests, including tissue transglutaminase IgA and total IgA

If needed, get additional blood tests such as deamidated gliadin peptide antibodies or endomysial antibodies

If blood tests are positive or suspicion remains high, have an upper endoscopy with small intestine biopsy

Consider genetic testing for HLA-DQ2 and HLA-DQ8 if diagnosis is unclear

Get tested if you have a close family member with celiac disease

Get tested if you have related conditions such as type 1 diabetes, autoimmune thyroid disease, or Down syndrome

Follow up with a healthcare professional to confirm the diagnosis and discuss next steps
