Gather ground beef, salt, pepper, oil or butter, and a skillet
Shape the beef into a patty slightly wider than the bun
Season both sides with salt and pepper
Heat the skillet over medium-high heat
Add a small amount of oil or butter
Place the patty in the hot skillet
Cook for 3 to 5 minutes on the first side
Flip the patty
Cook for 3 to 5 minutes on the second side
Cook until the internal temperature reaches 160°F
Add cheese during the last minute if desired
Remove the patty from the skillet
Let it rest for a few minutes
Serve on a bun with toppings if desired
