Rest and avoid activities that worsen pain
Apply ice packs for 15 to 20 minutes at a time, several times a day for the first 48 hours
Use heat after the first 48 hours if it helps relieve stiffness
Take over-the-counter pain relievers as directed on the label
Support the area with a pillow when coughing, sneezing, or moving
Take slow, deep breaths regularly to help keep the lungs clear
Avoid wrapping or tightly binding the chest
Sleep in a position that reduces pressure on the ribs
Avoid heavy lifting, twisting, and contact sports until healed
Seek medical care if pain is severe, breathing is difficult, or symptoms worsen
