Rest the finger and stop the activity that caused the injury
Remove any rings or tight jewelry immediately
Apply ice wrapped in a cloth for 15–20 minutes at a time
Elevate the hand above heart level
Buddy tape the injured finger to the adjacent finger if it is not deformed
Use a splint if recommended or if movement is very painful
Take over-the-counter pain relievers if safe for you to use
Gently move the finger as pain allows after the first day or two
Avoid forceful bending, gripping, or sports until pain improves
Seek medical care if the finger looks crooked, is very swollen, cannot bend or straighten, has numbness, or pain is severe
Seek medical care if symptoms do not improve within a few days or worsen
