Rest and avoid activities that worsen pain
Use ice packs for 15 to 20 minutes at a time during the first 48 hours
Take over-the-counter pain relievers as directed on the label
Breathe deeply and cough gently several times an hour to prevent lung complications
Hold a pillow against the injured area when coughing or moving
Avoid wrapping or tightly bandaging the chest
Sleep in a position that is most comfortable, often slightly upright
Avoid lifting, twisting, and strenuous exercise until healed
Eat a healthy diet and stay hydrated
Seek medical care if you have trouble breathing, severe pain, fever, coughing up blood, or worsening symptoms
