Apply a cold pack for 10 to 20 minutes at a time during the first 24 to 48 hours
Rest and avoid using the bruised area too much
Elevate the bruised area above heart level when possible
Use gentle compression with an elastic bandage if appropriate
Switch to warm compresses after 48 hours to improve blood flow
Take acetaminophen for pain if needed
Avoid aspirin and ibuprofen in the first 24 hours if possible
Eat foods rich in vitamin C and vitamin K
Stay hydrated
Avoid alcohol and smoking
Protect the bruise from further injury
Seek medical care if the bruise is very large, very painful, frequent, or unexplained
