Turn off the water supply to the toilet
Flush the toilet to empty the tank and bowl
Sponge out any remaining water from the bowl and tank
Disconnect the water supply line from the toilet tank
Remove the caps from the toilet bolts
Unscrew the nuts from the toilet bolts
Rock the toilet gently to break the seal
Lift the toilet straight up and set it aside on a protected surface
Scrape off the old wax ring from the toilet flange and toilet base
Inspect the flange for damage and repair if needed
Place the new wax ring on the flange or toilet horn
Align the toilet with the bolts and lower it straight down
Press the toilet firmly into place to compress the wax ring
Reinstall and tighten the nuts evenly on the toilet bolts
Reconnect the water supply line
Turn the water supply back on
Flush the toilet and check for leaks
Reinstall the bolt caps
Caulk around the base if desired, leaving a small gap at the back
