Use a standard 52-card deck
Remove jokers if present
Shuffle the deck thoroughly
Deal 20 cards to each player
Place the remaining cards face down in a draw pile
Deal 5 cards face up in a row between the players
Leave space for two discard piles next to the row
Each player keeps their 20 cards in a face-down stack
Both players are now ready to start simultaneously
