Hold the crutch on the side opposite your injured or weak leg
Adjust the crutch so the top pad sits about 1 to 2 inches below your armpit
Keep your weight on your hands, not your armpit
Stand upright with the crutch close to your body
Move the crutch and injured leg forward at the same time
Step through with your stronger leg
Keep your steps short and controlled
Look ahead, not down at your feet
Use handrails on stairs if available
Go up stairs with your stronger leg first, then the crutch and injured leg
Go down stairs with the crutch and injured leg first, then the stronger leg
Avoid slippery or uneven surfaces when possible
Wear supportive, non-slip shoes
Stop if you feel pain, dizziness, or instability
