Be a U.S. citizen or legal resident
Be a resident of Illinois or work in Illinois
Be able to read and write English
Have no disqualifying felony convictions
Complete the Illinois notary application
Obtain a $5,000 surety bond
Submit the application and bond to the Illinois Secretary of State
Pay the required filing fee
Receive your notary commission
Purchase notary supplies
Keep your notary seal and journal secure
Follow Illinois notary laws and procedures
Renew your commission before it expires
