How To Propagate Orchids?

Use a mature, healthy orchid plant

Choose the propagation method based on orchid type

Divide sympodial orchids by separating clumps with multiple pseudobulbs

Ensure each division has roots and at least 3 growths

Cut with sterilized tools

Dust cuts with cinnamon or fungicide if needed

Pot each division in fresh orchid mix

Keep divisions slightly moist, not wet

Place in bright, indirect light

Maintain warm temperatures and moderate humidity

Propagate keikis by waiting for roots to develop

Remove keikis only after roots are several inches long

Pot keikis in small containers with orchid mix

Use backbulb propagation for some orchids with dormant bulbs

Place backbulbs on moist sphagnum moss until new growth appears

Keep air circulation good

Avoid overwatering

Fertilize lightly after new growth starts

Repot only when necessary

Use seed propagation only in sterile lab conditions

Monitor for rot, pests, and stress during recovery
