Use a warm compress on the affected ear for 10–15 minutes at a time
Keep the ear dry
Sleep with the affected ear elevated
Take over-the-counter pain relievers as directed on the label
Use over-the-counter ear drops only if a doctor or pharmacist says they are safe for you
Drink plenty of fluids
Rest as much as possible
Avoid putting cotton swabs, oils, or other objects into the ear
Avoid swimming until symptoms improve
Seek medical care if you have fever, severe pain, swelling, drainage, hearing loss, dizziness, or symptoms lasting more than 1–2 days
