Wash your hands
Use a clean neti pot
Fill it with sterile, distilled, or previously boiled and cooled water
Add the saline packet or mix the correct saline solution
Stand over a sink and tilt your head sideways
Insert the spout into the upper nostril
Breathe through your mouth
Pour the solution gently so it flows through one nostril and out the other
Repeat on the other side
Blow your nose gently afterward
Clean and dry the neti pot after each use
Use only sterile, distilled, or previously boiled and cooled water
Do not use tap water unless it has been properly boiled and cooled
