Choose a sunny location with well-drained soil
Plant garlic in fall, about 4 to 6 weeks before the ground freezes
Separate the garlic bulb into individual cloves
Select the largest, healthiest cloves for planting
Place cloves pointy end up and root end down
Plant cloves 2 inches deep
Space cloves 4 to 6 inches apart
Space rows 12 to 18 inches apart
Cover cloves with soil and gently firm it
Water lightly after planting
Add mulch to protect the cloves and suppress weeds
Keep the soil evenly moist during growth
Remove weeds regularly
Stop watering when the leaves begin to yellow before harvest
Harvest when most lower leaves have turned brown
Cure harvested bulbs in a dry, airy place
Store cured garlic in a cool, dry location
