Identify the clematis group before pruning
Prune Group 1 after flowering
Remove dead, damaged, or weak stems first
Thin overcrowded stems to improve airflow
Cut Group 2 lightly in late winter or early spring
Remove only dead or weak growth from Group 2
Trim Group 2 stems to strong buds if needed
Cut Group 3 back hard in late winter or early spring
Reduce Group 3 stems to about 12 to 18 inches above ground
Make cuts just above healthy buds
Use clean, sharp pruning shears
Remove all pruned debris from the plant base
