Open the reel bail or line holder
Tie the fishing line to the spool or backing
Close the bail or secure the line
Spool the line onto the reel evenly
Cut the line to the desired length
Attach a hook, lure, or bait rig to the end of the line
Add a sinker or float if needed
Check that all knots are tight
Test the rod, reel, and line for smooth operation
