Locate the main water shutoff valve
Check the basement, crawl space, utility room, garage, or outside meter box
Turn the valve clockwise until it stops
If it is a lever-style valve, turn it a quarter turn so it is perpendicular to the pipe
Open a faucet to relieve remaining pressure
Confirm water has stopped at sinks, tubs, and toilets
If you cannot find or turn the valve, contact your water utility or a plumber
