Sit or stand upright
Avoid lying down for at least 2 to 3 hours after eating
Loosen tight clothing around the waist
Take small sips of water
Use an over-the-counter antacid if you normally tolerate it
Use an over-the-counter acid reducer if you normally take one
Avoid trigger foods and drinks such as spicy food, fatty food, caffeine, alcohol, and carbonated drinks
Eat nothing more until the discomfort settles
Apply a warm compress to the back if it helps
Take a short, gentle walk if movement feels comfortable
Sleep with your upper body elevated if symptoms happen at night
Seek urgent medical care if the pain is severe, new, worsening, or comes with chest pain, shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, vomiting, or arm/jaw pain
